Hi,
I’m in Utah for an altitude training camp with the APU team these next 2 weeks, hopefully. There’s a fire just east of us, which is blasting a lot of smoke into the surrounding areas.
As you can probably imagine, inhaling small bits of ash over many hours of endurance training doesn’t sound especially nice, so our training schedule for this camp will look a little different depending on air quality.
So far, it seems like the smoke is avoidable by going higher in elevation or driving to a different valley. If it becomes impossible to avoid, I’m outta here. I have a low tolerance for smoke. Another option is to train in an N95, which is the worst, so hopefully it doesn’t come to that. Here are pictures from this morning - we ran up high and looked down at some gnarly smoke. It’s kind of beautiful if you don’t think about it
We’ve been listening to the song, “World on Fire” by Stick Figure, which is good. We have a male-heavy team at the moment, with 8 boys and 2 girls. The team was manic last night upon arrival at a pretty beautiful house after a long day of travel.

Coming to altitude is a treat, but also a little unpleasant. I usually have a headache for the first couple days, I don’t sleep super well, and my skin is dry. Training feels especially hard and walking up stairs gets me breathing hard. But, there’s a really cool training adaptation from the lack of oxygen, and there’s no shortage of sun. So it’s all worth it <3
Thanks for checking in and see you next time.
